Fernweh

If you are living in the northern hemisphere and are not particularly fond of winter, snow, short days and cold, you might be currently experiencing a sense of Fernweh for warmer, sunnier places. This week’s German Word of the Week, Fernweh, is reminiscent of the romanticists of the early 19th century with their melancholic motifs of yearning, travelling and darkness. It does not have a direct counterpart in the English language, but might be translated as wanderlust or itchy feet. Neither of these, however, give an accurate rendition of its meaning. Fernweh could best be described as a yearning for a distant place or distant places, coupled with the desire for new experiences and impressions and leaving one’s comfort zone for at least a little while. Have you felt this sensation before? Now you have a word to describe it.
