Torschützenkönig

For this week’s German Word of the Week we’re looking at a term in the world of sports, more precisely football (soccer): Torschützenkönig, the top scorer at the end of the football season or of a tournament. Literally, it translates as Goal Shooter King. Famous Torschützenkönige, as the plural goes, in the German Bundesliga are Mario Gomez (2010/11), Miroslav Klose (2005/06) or Gerd Müller (first in 1966/67). There is also the Eternal List of Torschützenkönige, which lists the top scorers with all their goals over the course of their career. In the English Premier League, it is headed by Alan Shearer with 260 goals, followed by Andrew Cole (187) and Thierry Henry (177).
